Every now and then, someone walks into your life and quietly changes the way you see your work, reminding us exactly why we launched the Next Chapter Project.

A few months ago, we received an email from a mother asking about publishing her daughter’s book. We arranged to meet at a café in Petaling Jaya, expecting what we usually expect—a conversation about publishing, editing, and the journey ahead.

What we didn’t expect was to read a fantasy manuscript written by a nine-year-old.

As publishers, we’ve read countless manuscripts over the years. Some are polished, others are rough, but every now and then, one reminds you why stories matter.

This one did.

The manuscript wasn’t perfect. Like every author’s first draft, it still needed time, guidance, and stronger world-building. There were moments where the story moved a little too quickly and places where more detail would help readers truly lose themselves in its magical world.

But none of that mattered.

What stood out was something much more important.

• Imagination.
• The confidence to create an entirely new world.
• Characters that felt alive.
• A story that could only have come from a young mind brave enough to put pen to paper.

It reminded us that great books don’t begin as perfect manuscripts. They begin as ideas.

 

The Next Chapter Project: The Reality Many Young Writers Face

During our conversation, her mother shared something that has stayed with us ever since.

She was incredibly excited to support her daughter’s dream, but she also had to think carefully about the financial commitment of publishing a book.

That conversation made us realise something.

There are probably hundreds of young Malaysians with stories waiting to be told.

Some write fantasy. Others dream up adventures, mysteries, science fiction, or heartfelt stories inspired by their own lives.

Many of them simply need someone to believe in them.

Not because they’re guaranteed to become bestselling authors overnight, but because every great writer deserves the chance to take that first step.

Publishing a Book in Malaysia Isn’t Just About Printing

One of the biggest misconceptions about publishing is that it’s simply printing a manuscript.

In reality, publishing involves editing, proofreading, cover design, illustration when needed, formatting, ISBN registration, printing, distribution, and marketing.

These costs can become a significant hurdle, especially for first-time authors and families supporting young writers.

At Blue Hawk Publications, we believe that talent shouldn’t be limited by opportunity.

Introducing The Next Chapter Project

That conversation inspired us to create The Rescue & Read Bundle: The Next Chapter Project.

Instead of asking for donations alone, we wanted to create something meaningful for readers too.

Here’s how it works.

We rescue high-quality pre-loved books, carefully inspect them, beautifully hand-wrap them, and send them to readers who love discovering great stories.

For every bundle sold, RM5 goes directly into our Young LOKAL Writer Fund.

When the fund reaches its target, we will open applications for Malaysian writers aged 10 to 17.

One young author will be selected by our review panel to receive a complete publishing experience at no publishing cost. The fund will cover professional editing, cover design, illustration where required, printing, and distribution, while the author continues to own the copyright to their work.

Once that book is published, we begin again.

• One author.
• One dream.
• Then the next.

Why We Chose Books to Fund Books

People often ask why we decided to use rescued books instead of traditional fundraising.

The answer is simple.

Every rescued book still has another story to tell.

By giving those books a second life, they help create the very first chapter of someone else’s publishing journey.

It’s a cycle we hope continues for years to come.
